Anxiety Disorders
Understanding it

What is Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders involve persistent, excessive fear or worry that lingers long after a stressful moment has passed — and starts to interfere with work, relationships and daily life. They are the most common mental health conditions, and among the most treatable.

Wave treats the full range — generalized anxiety, panic disorder and social anxiety — with physician-led medication management, supportive therapy and, where helpful, non-medication options like TMS.

Signs & symptoms

Anxiety shows up in the mind and the body. Common signs include:

Emotional

  • Persistent, hard-to-control worry or dread
  • Feeling on edge, restless or keyed up
  • Fear of losing control or the worst happening

Behavioral

  • Avoiding situations that trigger anxiety
  • Seeking constant reassurance
  • Trouble concentrating or mind going blank

Physical

  • Racing heart, shortness of breath or chest tightness
  • Muscle tension, headaches or stomach upset
  • Trouble sleeping and fatigue
The evaluation

How it’s diagnosed at Wave

Diagnosis begins with a thorough evaluation to identify which anxiety disorder is present and to rule out medical causes such as thyroid problems. Pinpointing the specific pattern — generalized, panic or social — shapes the most effective plan.

We also screen for commonly co-occurring depression, because treating both together leads to better outcomes.

Why Wave

Care led by a triple board-certified physician

Wave Treatment Centers is led by Dr. Jonathan Beatty, a triple board-certified physician in psychiatry & neurology, addiction medicine and pain medicine, and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. With more than 18 years of experience, he treats the cases other practices send onward — including complex and treatment-resistant presentations.

Because Wave combines everyday psychiatric care with advanced, interventional options under one roof, your plan can evolve as you do — from medication management to TMS, Spravato or ketamine — without starting over with a new provider.

What to expect

Your first appointment

Your first visit is a thorough evaluation. You’ll find a welcoming environment where our highly trained staff work to understand your history, your symptoms, and what you’re hoping to change.

While an evaluation is not a guarantee of a prescription, if medication is deemed appropriate, we’ll work closely with you to ensure you understand the risks and benefits. Together we’ll outline a personalized plan and the next steps that fit your life.

Most new patients are seen within one to two weeks — and care is available both in person and through secure, HIPAA-compliant telemedicine across Pennsylvania, Florida and New Jersey.

Common questions

Anxiety Disorders FAQ

Will I have to take medication for anxiety forever?

Often not. Many people use medication for a period while building skills and stability, then taper. Others prefer non-medication options like therapy or TMS. We tailor it to you.

Are benzodiazepines the only option?

No — and they’re not our first choice, given dependence risks. Effective, non-addictive medications and therapies are usually a better long-term path, which we’ll prioritize.

How long before I feel better?

Some treatments help within weeks; skills-based approaches build over time. We track progress and adjust so you’re not stuck waiting.
