Substance use disorders are medical conditions — and recovery is possible.
Alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines and stimulants change the brain in ways willpower alone can’t undo. Wave treats the root, with physician-led outpatient care.
What is Substance Use Disorders?
Substance use disorders are treatable medical conditions in which using alcohol or other drugs becomes compulsive and hard to control despite the harm it causes. They involve real changes in the brain’s reward and stress systems — which is why willpower alone so rarely resolves them.
Wave provides physician-led outpatient care for alcohol, opioid, benzodiazepine and stimulant use disorders, led by a board-certified addiction-medicine specialist. We treat the root — including any co-occurring mental health condition — not just the symptom.
A substance use disorder may be present when use continues despite mounting consequences. Common signs include:
Emotional / Cognitive
- Strong cravings or preoccupation with using
- Anxiety, irritability or low mood between uses
- Using to cope with stress, pain or emotions
Behavioral
- Needing more to get the same effect (tolerance)
- Failed attempts to cut back or stop
- Neglecting work, family or responsibilities
Physical
- Withdrawal symptoms when not using
- Changes in sleep, appetite or weight
- Declining health or unexplained injuries
In crisis? Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be dangerous — even life-threatening — if stopped abruptly. Please don’t quit cold turkey without medical guidance; we can help you taper safely.

How it’s diagnosed at Wave
Diagnosis starts with an honest, judgment-free evaluation of your substance use, medical history and any co-occurring conditions such as depression, anxiety or trauma. Wave uses a biological–psychological–social model to understand the whole picture, not just the substance.
Because addiction and mental health are deeply connected, we screen for dual diagnosis from the start — so the treatment plan addresses every factor keeping the cycle going.
Wave treats substance use disorders as the medical conditions they are. Options include:
Every plan is individualized — you’ll feel seen, not processed.
Outpatient Detox
Physician-supervised outpatient withdrawal management, with medication support and close daily follow-up.
Medication Management
Careful prescribing, ongoing monitoring and genetic testing to match you with the right medication at the right dose.
Long-Acting Injectables
Extended-release injectable medications that replace a daily pill and support consistent, long-term stability.
Supportive Psychotherapy
Talk-based support integrated with your medical care, focused on coping skills and steady, measurable progress.
Interventional Psychiatry
Advanced, procedure-based care — TMS, Spravato and ketamine — for symptoms that medication alone hasn’t resolved.
Care led by a triple board-certified physician
Wave Treatment Centers is led by Dr. Jonathan Beatty, a triple board-certified physician in psychiatry & neurology, addiction medicine and pain medicine, and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. With more than 18 years of experience, he treats the cases other practices send onward — including complex and treatment-resistant presentations.
Because Wave combines everyday psychiatric care with advanced, interventional options under one roof, your plan can evolve as you do — from medication management to TMS, Spravato or ketamine — without starting over with a new provider.
Meet Dr. BeattyYour first appointment
Your first visit is a thorough evaluation. You’ll find a welcoming environment where our highly trained staff work to understand your history, your symptoms, and what you’re hoping to change.
While an evaluation is not a guarantee of a prescription, if medication is deemed appropriate, we’ll work closely with you to ensure you understand the risks and benefits. Together we’ll outline a personalized plan and the next steps that fit your life.
Most new patients are seen within one to two weeks — and care is available both in person and through secure, HIPAA-compliant telemedicine across Pennsylvania, Florida and New Jersey.
Substance Use Disorders FAQ
Do I have to go to a residential rehab?
Not necessarily. Many people recover through outpatient care, which lets you continue living at home and working while receiving physician-supervised treatment. We’ll recommend the level of care that fits your situation safely.
What is medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?
MAT combines FDA-approved medications — such as buprenorphine, naltrexone or Vivitrol — with supportive care to reduce cravings and withdrawal. It’s an evidence-based standard of care, not “trading one drug for another.”
Is my information confidential?
Yes. All care at Wave is private and HIPAA-compliant, and substance use treatment carries additional federal confidentiality protections.
What if I’ve relapsed before?
Relapse is common and does not mean failure — it’s information we use to strengthen your plan. Recovery is a process, and we meet you wherever you are.
